My work is a glimpse at how I observe my surroundings, both the natural and the man made. I value sharing this moment of discovery through tangible creations. Defining the initial parameters that the gathered natural artifacts or handmade forms are then composed within is as important to me as the placement of the forms themselves. A language becomes present within the field; each form has a conversation with the next based on its shape and amount of empty space between them. These relationships are a source of inspiration for me. It is something that we all feel every moment of every day, but we are not always consciously aware of it.
When a brook wanders and weaves through the land it either flows over, through, or around various structures and material compositions, adjusting its directional path when it encounters obstacles. For example, just the placement of a stone could create a curve that otherwise would not have existed. Beauty and inherent pattern exist often unnoticed, and my work attempts to bring recognition to these undiscovered places. Both growth and decay are captivating to me, as for example, a miniature cluster of mushrooms that exist in a hollow of a tree, patterns formed by cattails on the edges of a pond, or tight groupings of cactus spires, weaving lines on worn away river stones, water marks left in the sand, frozen bubbles in the ice and the depths of a cavity in a tree where a branch once lived. The absence of form and the forms themselves express life force energy that inspires me. By capturing the essence of space, texture, light and color, I endeavor to engage the viewer to pause and acknowledge this fundamental beauty that might otherwise go unnoticed.
